As part of our traveling series of restaurant reviews, today I want to single out the exceptionally elegant Green Room, one of the dining options of the beautiful Wilmington Delaware landmark, the Hotel DuPont. Recently, I posted a review of the stage version of Beauty and the Beast on Wisdom Laughter Healing, which I’d had the pleasure of experiencing at the lovely DuPont Theatre.
Prior to the performance, I’d also experienced the distinct pleasure of enjoying a buffet lunch in the Green Room, featuring among other delicacies, perfectly seasoned and prepared Filet Mignon and Salmon, along with a wide array of vegetables including Green Beans Almondine and Red Roasted Potatoes. From the moment we walked in, I was struck by the sheer elegance of my surroundings, where gorgeous gold chandeliers hung from a coffered oak-beamed ceiling; fumed oak paneling hearkened to an era of fine craftsmanship; arched floor-to-ceiling windows adorned with rich burgundy-and-gold curtains evoked a Renaissance feel; and Italian mosaic added the final, artistic touch.
While white-gloved servers greeted us warmly and provided impeccable service, we first feasted on a salad buffet that included fresh Greek, Caesar and Caprese offerings, along with an assortment of delectable cheeses like Brie, Swiss and Buffalo Mozzarella. While I did not sample that day’s Soup du Jour — Lobster Bisque — it received rave reviews from one of our table mates.
As for the main course, both the surf and the turf were an absolutely melt-in-your-mouth profusion of succulent flavor, along with the accompanying vegetables.
Oh — and did I mention the freshly baked rolls? Enough to make an Atkins dieter swoon before falling off the low-carb wagon!
Speaking of diet violations, the sweet table was to die for — filled with exquisite European and American favorites like tiramisu, eclairs, cheesecake, chocolate chips, chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons and chocolate-dipped juicy strawberries.
It’s no wonder that the Green Room has been the winner of the Four-Diamond AAA Award for 26 consecutive years!
Remarkably, when considering the amount of high-caliber selections offered by the buffet and the indescribable experience of just spending an hour or so in such elegant surroundings, the price was relatively modest. Of course, sharing a meal in the Green Room is not something a budget-conscious consumer can do every single day, which only adds to the richness of the experience. It’s a special treat everyone should enjoy at least once in their lives.
So if your travel plans bring you north to the “Small Wonder” state of Delaware, I highly recommend a stop at the Green Room in the Hotel DuPont. And while you’re there, be sure to catch a live stage performance at the theater and stroll through the entire magnificent building. Although it had been the site of my sister’s wedding reception nearly 17 years ago, I’d almost forgotten how breathtaking the Hotel DuPont truly is. What a joy to be able to indulge in the experience again!
