One of the most delightful vendor conversations Bev and I had at The Festival of Chocolate was with the husband-and-wife team of Hilary Saporta and Bernie Diaz, proprietors of A Flair For Fudge, whose unique creations were a treat for the taste-buds! 1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I have been a marketing and advertising professional since 1987 and have always had a strong entrepreneurial inclination. I owned and operated Emerald Group Associates, an advertising agency for 19 years. Sold the business in 2001 and continued doing some freelance work.
Went back to the corporate world in March, 2009 (due to the economic situation) as Promotions and Marketing Director for a mega motorcycle dealership. I was told in December 2010 that my department would close. It was purely a financial decision. As a mater of fact, I’m still very close to top management and many of the employees, and my business, A Flair For Fudge, is an exhibitor at most of the dealership’s promotional events.
Have been married since 1998. But my husband, Bernie, and I have been together since 1991. We have a 16 year old cat named Victor. I’m a huge college football fanatic, love to travel and, of course, make fudge. I’m a true believer that if you love what you do, you’ll love how you live.
2. What inspired you to start your business?
 
I’ve been making fudge for friends and family for over ten years during the holidays and the response has always been so overwhelmingly flattering. After my department closed down, at the dealership, I did a lot of soul searching as to what my next career move would be.
With the help of a few very special people in my life, I realized that my next dream job was right in front of my eyes. So, I turned my labor of love (making fudge), into an adventure I enjoy living every day.

3. Who are your customers? Are they local, international or both? Are they unique in some way? For example, are any of your customers famous?
I have both local and national consumer and corporate customers and they are all unique and famous, as far as I’m concerned. One of the many blessings of this business is the fantastic people I have met and this is just the beginning!
 
4. Have you ever appeared on TV?
Not yet, but that is certainly one of my many goals for A Flair For Fudge!
5. How long have you been in business?
 
A Flair For Fudge was launched April 1, 2011. We originally started with 6 different Real! Unique! Fudge! varieties and now we’re up to thirteen selections, including our seasonal Pumpkin Pie fudge which is only available until 12/16/2011. (NOTE: WE DECIDED TO DELETE BLACK BEAN FROM CURRENT MENU AND REPLACE WITH PPF)

6. Of all the products/services you offer, which is your favorite?
 
Well, it used to be the “Dark Wasabi and Ginger”, but that’s been replaced by the “Dark and Spicy.” It’s a delicious combination of rich dark chocolate, Cayenne pepper and a touch of sea salt. The “Dark and Spicy” was recently introduced and quickly becoming one of our most popular fudge selections. It sold very well at November’s Palm Beach Chocolate Festival.
 
7. What is unique about your product or service?
We use only the finest ingredients to achieve the most original fudge combinations (as you can see from our selections listed on question # 5) and delicious tastes, our customers will ever experience.
