In honor of Irish Coffee Day because who doesn’t need more Irish Coffee in their lives? Great for a winter warm up!
Hot coffee drinks were an after dinner mainstay in my house when my parents were entertaining.
My Dad kept a fully stocked bar of liqueurs and after the meal plates were cleared, the bottles were brought to the table and my Mom would make her homemade whipped cream while pots of fresh coffee were brewed for the guests. Frangelico, amaretto, Bailey’s … you name it … it was there on the table. And in the center of it all, the Irish Coffee, mixed up special.
Since today is National Irish Coffee Day, we are sharing the original and traditional Irish Coffee recipe developed by Chef Joe Sheridan at the Port of Foyne in Ireland in 1934 – Slainte!
The Original Irish Coffee Recipe:
Cream – Rich as an Irish Brogue
Coffee- Strong as Friendly Hand
Sugar – Sweet as the tongue of a Rouge
Irish Whiskey – smooth as the Wit of the Land
In a warm stemmed whiskey goblet, pour one jigger of Irish whiskey. Add one spoon of brown sugar and fill with strong black coffee within one inch of brim. Stir to dissolve the sugar and top off with whipped cream, slightly aerated by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Do not stir after adding the cream as the true flavor is obtained by drinking the hot coffee and Irish whiskey through the cream.
Classic Irish Coffee
- 2 oz Irish Whiskey
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 5 – 6 oz freshly brewed strong black coffee
Stir thoroughly and top off with a layer of heavy whipping cream, poured gently over the back of a spoon. Sip the hot coffee through the cream!
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
